From boardrooms to Big Sur: a 9-day California bleisure trip

Two locked client meetings in San Francisco, then the coast road south — with honest notes on Highway 1 closures, buffers and two ways to route it.

This is a fictional case built to show how Wayvero plans around commitments that cannot move. Our traveller has two client meetings in San Francisco — invented for this example — and six days to spare afterwards. The goal: a work week that never feels rushed, followed by one of the world's great coastal drives, ending at LAX.

Work first, one base

During the business days nothing should change except the meeting room. A single downtown hotel within walking distance of both meetings removes commute risk entirely. We keep the arrival day free for jet lag, place no checkout on a meeting day, and start the leisure route only the morning after the last meeting. Evenings are for Hayes Valley, North Beach or the Mission — short taxi rides, good food, early nights.

Highway 1 is a privilege, not a promise

The Big Sur coast is spectacular and fragile. Storms and landslides close sections of Highway 1 from time to time, sometimes for long periods. This plan never assumes the road is open: check the official Caltrans road-conditions service the evening before and the morning of driving. If a section is closed, the inland US-101 detour from Monterey towards San Luis Obispo is longer but dependable.

Two ways to route the coast

The scenic version sleeps in Monterey or Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles — maximum coastline, four hotel changes after work. The calmer version uses Carmel as a base for a Big Sur day drive and then three nights in Santa Barbara, driving to LAX on the last morning. Wayvero compares both on hotel changes and estimated driving hours so you can choose with eyes open.

Ending at LAX without drama

The last night stays within reach of the airport. Los Angeles traffic is famously unpredictable, so we plan 45 to 90 minutes from Santa Monica to LAX and avoid long drives on flight day. Rental cars dropped off in a different city than pick-up usually carry a one-way fee, which we show as a separate estimate.
