Peru without altitude panic: Lima, the Sacred Valley and Cusco

Eat your way through Lima, then sleep low in the Sacred Valley before Machu Picchu and Cusco — a twelve-day route designed around acclimatisation.

Most Peru itineraries fly straight into Cusco at around 3,400 metres. We reverse the order: start lower, climb gradually, and save the city for when your body has caught up.

Lima, the food capital

Three nights by the Pacific in Miraflores or Barranco give you time to recover from the long flight and to eat — ceviche at lunch, a market tour, perhaps one special tasting-menu dinner.

Sleep low first

After a short flight to Cusco, drive straight down into the Sacred Valley, roughly 600 metres lower. Three gentle nights among Inca terraces and weaving villages let you acclimatise. Ask your doctor about altitude before you go.

Machu Picchu: plan, don't assume

Entry is by timed ticket with daily limits, and train seats from Ollantaytambo sell out in high season. Reserve as early as you can — this itinerary does not and cannot guarantee permits. An overnight in Aguas Calientes lets you visit early or late.

Cusco last

By the time you reach Cusco you'll be ready for its steep lanes. Four nights cover museums, San Pedro market and a day trip to the countryside.
