Thailand in July with a one-year-old: Bangkok, Hua Hin and Koh Samui
Rainy season, a toddler and a long-haul flight — and yet. How a slow Gulf-coast route keeps transfers short, naps sacred and the sea warm.

But the Gulf of Thailand plays by different rules from the Andaman coast, and for a family travelling with a one-year-old, that difference shapes everything.
Why the Gulf, not the Andaman
The south-west monsoon pushes its heaviest weather onto Phuket and Krabi between May and October, often with rough seas that cancel boat trips. The Gulf islands sit in a partial rain shadow, so July there is typically a mix of bright mornings and short afternoon showers rather than days of grey. That is a climate pattern, not a promise — some years are wetter — but it is why this route bends east. With a baby, calm water and the option to stay put matter more than ticking off islands.
Three bases, two real transfers
We kept the shape deliberately simple: Bangkok to land and recover, Hua Hin for an easy road-trip beach week, then Koh Samui for the long, slow finale. Only two transfers really count, and each is followed by at least four nights. A road transfer from Bangkok to Hua Hin takes roughly three to four hours depending on traffic, which with a car seat and a planned stop becomes a half-day adventure rather than an ordeal.
The rhythm of a toddler day
Mornings belong to the beach and the pool before the heat builds. Late morning is nap time back in the room, ideally one with blackout curtains and a fridge for milk. Afternoons drift: a market walk in a carrier, a shaded café, a shower watched from a covered terrace. Evenings are early, with night markets visited at opening rather than at their peak. Planning fewer things per day turned out to be the single best decision.
What we would tell a friend
Book family rooms with space for a travel cot, ask about high chairs, and pack a compact stroller rather than a large one — pavements are uneven. Pharmacies are easy to find in Bangkok, Hua Hin and Samui, but bring your usual medicines. Keep an eye on mosquito protection suitable for small children, and check current travel-health advice with your doctor before departure.

Getting around
- Two meaningful transfers: road to Hua Hin, flight to Samui.
- All times are approximate and unverified; no connections have been checked.
- Bring or pre-book an infant car seat — not all transfer companies provide one.
Season caveats
July is green season. The Gulf coast is typically drier than the Andaman coast, but showers and occasional rough days happen. Avoid committing to boat trips in advance.
Where to stay
- Bangkok riverside — Boats instead of traffic, pools for downtime.
- Hua Hin central beachfront — Walkable, flat, plenty of family restaurants.
- Samui north or east coast — Calmer water in many spots; choose a beach with shade.
